HOUSTON, TX— Wrapped in a flag in impeding traffic while striking vehicles with a flag pole, a man was fatally shot in southwest Houston on Wednesday evening by a police officer after he is said to have charged at her.
The incident occurred along the 7100 block of Beechnut Street near Fondren Road shortly after 6 p.m. Houston Police Department Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner told reporters after the shooting that the man assaulted Officer Ashley Kelley upon her arrival at the scene, prompted her to retreat. The officer then deployed her Taser to no effect before the man charged at her again, prompting the officer to fire her gun.
Finner said the officer fired just one shot, hitting the man in the chest. The suspect was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said the man had assaulted two other people before police arrived.
Kelly is a two-year police veteran working out of the Gessner station.
